Top Tips for Interviews

Top Tips for Interviews

By Martin Ellis

I lead and watch hundreds of interviews every year. Lots of people do themselves down by silly mistakes they have the intelligence and common sense to avoid. I see people miss out on jobs they should have got.

Here are my top ten tips for interviews:

LISTEN TO THE QUESTION!!!

Interviewees are often so keen to impress they anticipate the close of the question half way through. They then anticipate the next question, and the next, then answer them all in one go. The interviewer is confused! This happens on almost every interview I attend, even with very senior executive candidates.

LISTEN TO THE QUESTION!!!

I really do mean it – LISTEN TO THE QUESTION and only answer that one.

SLOW DOWN

Candidates eagerness to please is a positive thing, but take a breath, think about your answers, and keep things simple. It will help the flow of the interview and allow you to take a little more control.

DON’T BE LATE

Never, ever be late. Allow bags of time for travel, then add an hour. If the motorway really is shut, call as soon as you know about it, even if you think you may arrive in time. It shows consideration and respect and that you plan ahead.

HAVE YOUR OWN QUESTIONS

Show you are capable of your own thoughts!

BE PREPARED

Do some research. It’s so easy on the internet. Why wouldn’t you?

APPEAR LIKE YOU ARE PREPARED

Have a small file. Bring some typed notes. Print off a few pages from their website. Don’t use scraps of paper with last minute scrawls. Let the interviewer notice you have gone to a little effort.

DRESS FOR THE OCCASION

Never dress down. If in doubt, dress up. Clean your shoes. A job was never lost because the interviewee was too well presented.

KEEP YOUR BODY LANGUAGE OPEN

Don’t sit there with your arms and legs crossed. It looks defensive. Be open and relaxed, but not so relaxed you’ve just come off the beach.

SMILE

Not like a Cheshire cat. Just look like you’re pleased to be there.

Interviews are not easy – there’s a lot riding on them. But stand out from the crowd by being in control of yourself and your pace.

Good Luck!
