What’s your job title?
By Mandy Brook
Those that know me well know I have a real thing (issue) about job titles! I don’t want to be defined by mine and I deliberately don’t have my title on my business card. I want people to talk to me, for me not for who they perceive me to be defined by my job title. Call me the cleaner, call me the MD I don’t care treat me the same. I am me…
So it was with interest when someone asked me what my job title I was the other day. I thought about it for the moment and realised I can be whatever I want to be. Would they know if I changed my title and said I was something random? It’s like my job title is who people think I am. WHY??!!!
In this extremely fast changing world of work we live in titles are getting more extreme some of those I’ve seen recently include Shredded Cheese Authority, Head of potatoes, Bread Scientist, Chief Happiness maker (secretly I like the last one) these are real, no doubt on people’s business cards. We are to blame the hirers, the clients, the recruiters need one to entice the talent to their organisation. Once there though do you become the title?
I ask people I interview about their the job title they want I can’t tell you how much it tells me about them. Nearly every issue I’ve had with staff has been about how they perceive themselves in our team, delusions of grandeur. Didn’t they listen? I rarely use my MD status unless I’m chasing money, it then seems to work so it does have its uses!
So as I so constantly remind people, be what you want to be but please don’t put me in a box until I’m dead!!!
What are your thoughts? Should our job titles define who we are? Should they make us treat people differently?
