Finding drivers with the right qualifications is becoming a “huge recruitment headache”, according to the Recruitment & Employment Confederation’s latest JobsOutlook survey.
The survey report, published today [22 October], showed that in September, 21% of employers looking to hire permanent drivers and distribution workers and 23% of those wanting to recruit through agencies expected shortages. Employers were more worried in September about filling driver vacancies than any other type of job.
In a statement, REC chief executive Kevin Green said people were put off entering the sector by the high costs of things like training and insurance.
He also said while the shortages were an “immediate problem” with the upcoming Christmas rush, it was only going to get worse in the long term.
As Recruiter reported earlier this month, the Freight Transport Association is also concerned the driver shortage could affect Christmas deliveries.
Green said: “We need to see more employers offering driver training and accreditation”.
He added that the Government could help kickstart the process by providing some funding.
