South East Based – circa £60k package

Reckon you’re a nimble-minded B2B sales professional with an eye for commercial opportunities that can be complex but need to be made simple? You may have a background in digital or marketing services or solution sales. This new business development role nods to sustainability, CSR and the environment. You’ll need to demonstrate great listening and communication skills just to get past first base. You will not get bored!

Our client has a reputation for strong technical expertise in services and products to sectors that make robust claims about efficiency, sustainability and the environment. They also have an unusual vision to do ‘good’, as well as a commercial imperative that combines for an intriguing and authoritative position in the market. This is a sizable organisation with a large UK footprint.

We will be pleased to provide our clients company name to qualified candidates at the end of the first screening telephone interview.

Reporting to the Senior Business Development Manager, this role has many facets, but they all end with sales that build growth and add to the bottom line. You will develop and manage a mixed pipeline of large and small proposals with sales cycles that can last from days to months, building and managing relationships along the way. You might be selling consultancy services to a large commercial company in the morning, and data management and analysis, or energy insights to home improvement organisations in the afternoon. You may be presenting one-to-one, or bidding and presenting to groups and panels.

There’s a mix of products and services that come off the shelf, as well as those where you’ll need to weave solutions that draw on a broad framework of offers that create something of direct value, or that organisations are able to present as strong differentiators in their own complicated and competitive marketplaces. You’ll manage a portfolio of existing clients, warm prospects, and dormant accounts, along with developing your own business and lead generation.

You’ll be meeting sophisticated decision-makers who need the reassurance they’re dealing with a professional, but you’ll not allow the details to stall progress either. You take control of the sales process and know where you are every step of the way – but you’re used to that.

Complex? Yes. But it would be dull otherwise.

You will be a professional sales person who can demonstrate a maturity of behaviour and purpose. The successful candidate will come with a wide range of different experiences, but they will meet the following specific skills and attributes:

  • You have a strong, demonstrable, and recent experience selling across multiple sectors and able to speak their language with authority.
  • You can craft professional solution-based proposals and quotes, present them to individuals, or boards, and close the deal.
  • You may well be experienced with selling in a digital/data/software/marketing solutions environment, or with a digital/marketing services background.
  • Experience of managing and co-ordinating tenders and bids including bid writing.
  • Excellent negotiation skills. That’s proper negotiation, not just lowering the price.
  • Excellent formal and informal communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • You’re organised, enjoy multi-tasking, and good with detail.

You also need to be comfortable on lead generation and follow up, as well as networking.  What underpins your sales style is an interest in identifying customer needs – and a track record of developing and matching solutions from a portfolio that includes a range of services, as well as opportunities for cross-selling. Specific sector experience isn’t as important. What counts is sensitivity to a wide range of audiences, and the ability to create interest with proven commercial purpose.

You are likely to be in the South East corner and work out of their central London office when you’re not travelling. However, candidates from further afield will be considered where their skills set makes them compelling. It’s a full-time role that’s formally 40 hours a week.

OTE is circa £60k with the greater proportion being basic salary plus commission or bonus. There’s an excellent benefits package and a car allowance or travel expenses will be available depending on geography and circumstances.

The target start date is as soon as practically possible depending on notice periods. Before that will be a screening interview with Martin Ellis of the RSE Group. Thereafter will be two interviews at our client’s offices, as well as a psychometric assessment.
