On 1st April 2019 the National Minimum Wage and National Living Wage will rise for anyone classed as a worker. Those workers aged over 25 years old will see the biggest increase in 4 years as the hour pay increases by 38 pence.

The government sets a minimum amount workers must get paid on average for the hours they work. This is called the National Minimum Wage (NMW) or the National Living Wage (NLW) if you’re aged 25+.

You are not entitled to a minimum wage if you are:-

Self-employed (if you choose to be)

A volunteer (if you choose to be)

A company director

A member of the armed forces

A work experience student, depending on the length of your placement

Under school leaving age

If you live in your employer’s home, you are entitled to the minimum wage unless:-

You’re a member of their family

You are not a member of the family, but you do share in the work and leisure activities and are not charged for meals or accommodation, eg an au pair

Who gets the apprentice rate? Those entitled are:-

In the first year of a current apprenticeship agreement

An apprentice aged under 19
